October- The Merchant of Venice
Characters in Merchant: Shylock -the "villian", Antonio -a man on trial who's life is threatened by Shylock & Portia a clever woman who saves Antonio from having to give a pound of flesh to Shylock
Main Plot events of October: Holling gets chalk dust on the cream puffs meant for his classmates, which earns him death threats. Sycorax and Caliban (the class rats) get out of their cage.
Who is Holling in Merchant?
*Antonio- in his dream Doug Swietick's brother tries to kill him with a soccer ball & he has many death threats hanging over his head (like ones Antonio got from Shylock),
*Shylock- "He's more like someone who wants... to become who he's supposed to be." ... "They wouldn't let him. They decided he had to be a certain way, and he was trapped. He couldn't be anything except for what he was." (page 48) obviously this resembles Holling's struggle to find who he is
What does Holling learn? He starts to grown up. Part of that is dealing with new and slightly terrifying situations and starting to question who he will be when he grows up.
