September- the month of no Shakespeare

In the month of September Holling Hoodhood developes his relationships with the other characters in the book; his father, mother, sister Heather, friends Danny and Doug, a special girl in his life Meryl Lee, the refugee from Vietnam Mai Thi, the bully Doug Swietick's brother, etc.

The most important relationship Holling developes is the one with Mrs. Baker, his teacher. She is the one who ifluences his the most of the course of the book and introduces Holling to the works of Skakespeare.

In the beginning Holling is convinced that Mrs. Baker "hates his guts" and is out to get him. Over time their relationship grows closer and more complex during the Wednesday afternoons they spend together.
